Why Styling Matters for Your Photos

One of the biggest things that impacts the overall feel of your photos before I even start shooting… is styling.

And not in a scary, “everything has to be perfect” kind of way.

What you wear truly helps shape the mood of your images. When outfits feel cohesive and coordinated, photos naturally feel softer, more emotional, and more elevated. Everything flows together visually, which allows the connection and emotion in your session to stand out even more.

On the other hand, when there are a lot of clashing colors, distracting patterns, or outfits that all pull attention in different directions, it can completely change the feeling of the final gallery.

Even with beautiful light and a gorgeous location, styling plays such a huge role in creating those timeless, intentional images people are usually drawn to.

Why Your Photos May Not Look Like Your Pinterest Inspiration

This is also one of the biggest reasons people can sometimes feel like their photos don't quite match the inspiration they saved on Pinterest.

Most of the time, it's not the location. It isn't even the poses or anything your photographer has done.

A lot of the time, it's the styling.

The tones, textures, and colors people wear are a huge part of what creates that soft, cohesive feeling in photos. When you look at a Pinterest board full of photography inspiration, the outfits are often playing a much bigger role than you realize.

How to Use Pinterest When Choosing What to Wear

An easy tip when planning outfits: if you already have a Pinterest board full of inspiration, pay attention to the colors the couples are wearing in those images.

Are you seeing a lot of soft neutrals? Warm tones? Muted colors? Denim? Creams and browns?

Try to pay attention to the overall color palette and use that as inspiration when choosing your own outfits.

You don't need to copy the exact outfits from your inspiration photos. Instead, look at the feeling of the images and the colors and textures that help create it.

A Few Simple Styling Tips for Your Session

If you're feeling stuck while planning outfits for your couples photos, here are a few simple things I recommend:

Coordinate instead of perfectly matching. You do not need to wear the exact same color. Choosing colors that complement each other will usually create a much more natural and elevated look.

Start with softer, more muted tones. Neutrals, earth tones, and softer colors tend to photograph beautifully and keep the focus on the connection between you.

Think about texture. Knits, linen, denim, layers, and other textures can add so much visual interest to your photos without being distracting.

Be careful with loud patterns and logos. They can pull attention away from the two of you and make your images feel visually busier.

Most importantly, wear something that still feels like you. The goal is never to make you feel uncomfortable or like you're dressing as someone else for photos.

You Don't Have to Figure Out What to Wear Alone

And truly, I know trying to figure out what to wear for photos can feel overwhelming. Most people are not putting together outfits for professional photos all the time, so of course it can feel stressful trying to make everything look good together while still feeling like yourself.

That's why I'm always happy to help my clients with styling guidance. I can help you choose between outfit options, suggest color palettes, coordinate outfits together, or even build inspiration boards to help bring your vision to life.

You don't have to figure it all out on your own, and having that extra guidance can make such a difference in how your photos feel in the end ✨

If you're planning a couples session and feeling stuck on what to wear, I'm always happy to help you plan the details. After all, your photos should feel like you, but just a little more intentional.
